Northern CA based published freelance photographer/ businessman with over 18 yrs experience focusing on lifestyle modeling using real people in natural settings, natural lighting. Both digital and film cameras are used based on shoot. I shoot with purpose, not to just do a tfcd. Life is about doing and realizing our gifts which are many. Don't fall prey to dreamkillers otherwise you're not living your dreams. I've self published over 14+ photography and poetry books with more to come on men and women of color. Don't be dismayed by the haters who want information from you but are unwilling to share what they know or what they find out and that goes for both models and photographers. As of 09, I only shoot very limited tfcds if they support one of the projects I'm working on otherwise I'm not shooting any, I prefer shooting new models or those who have managed their image and not become overexposed with too many tfcds. So, most of my models don't come from mm. TFCD is an excellent tool for new models as long as it's done in moderation again with plan and objectives, not just continually shooting to get photo after photo just for comments or that fall into no plan. I've only shot 3 models total from mm not because there aren't great models here but rather I already had a working list backlog of requests from non mm models and referrals. As well, I do all male wardrobe and styling myself. I shoot both male and female models for projects. Before you send me a request asking to be a part of one of the projects, check the preview book links first. 1/09- Not shooting at present due to having to replace 2 digital cameras and marketing of product line. To resume by early Spring 10. I have an ongoing model request list for tfcds and other projects which I'll be referring too on starting back. Life is too short for drama and opportunists. If you don't know how to network, then you won't go far. Acknowledge those who contact you. Don't burn a bridge you may need to cross back over. Actions show the real person talk is just that...talk. Don't be a tiffany box...looks good outside but could be empty/full of bs inside. Be Professional period. It pays off in the long run.
I capture the sensual realism in our lives of men and women through mainstream and erotic photography as well as poetry written about life, love and eroticism. It's that untapped sex appeal (real sexy glamour) that's we each have but often times overlooked. A model's face and sex appeal are the first selling points for my shooting them, then comes body, attitude/ professionalism. A photo should tell a story, doesn't matter if you shooting male or female...both women and men have sex appeal. Most just don't now how much. The beauty in photography is having someone realize how well they capture in a shot and the results of collaboration as lasting memories. Life is far too short for drama filled divas who've only done local shows, no major agencies or tearsheets and think they are the shit. The shots in my port have not been enhanced and the majority of models having never been shot prior as I love realism period in all respects. If you've already been in a coffee table book, the odds of being selected for one of my projects in the men or women of color line is low. I believe in giving unpublished faces an opportunity to be published. As I've learned from the focus group I had for MOC V1...people want and crave realism in photography and life. Plainly put...Photoshop is not on my list of to do items after a photoshoot. An agency wants to see the real you, not a manufactured you that doesn't match you in person. My shots are reality...what I capture is what you see, no chasers.

Being a Successful photographer is having your own vision, practicing your craft, believing in your contributions, not being afraid to be a trendsetter or visionary, not being afraid to share your learnings with others, being confident enough not to be intimidated by being surrounded by great talent but rather give credit where credit is due and never being too old or established to learn from others. Don't allow the dream killers to take away your hopes and dreams. Who better to take you to the next level and do big thangs than yourself. Don't wait for someone to do what you can do for yourself. We live in the age of do it your damn self, not wait for someone else who may steal your dreams and claim them as their own. Get and promote your own swagga...and do the BIG...Self publish...why not? Purpose baby...it's all about vision.
Being a Successful model is being willing to objectively research and decide what you want from the industry personally and professionally, to assess your strengths and weaknesses from looks, attitude, exercise and body regimes, networking, learning the business aspects of industry, to self managing your image even if you're signed to an agency, to believing mind, body and soul that you are and will be a successful model based on what "YOU" not others has defined your success to be, to being a businessman or businesswoman about your career and lastly to develop and modify a model plan to guide you. Ignorance and "I don't know" is unacceptable in the internet age we live in. Don't wait for someone to tell you...find out and research for yourself so you know and nobody can lie or bs the truth. Everybody wants to be a model no matter what size, what height, looks but the reality is many start, very few end up being true models. The fact is most people have misconceptions about what modeling is and what the requirements and fail to research the truth versus fiction. Just because "somebody" told you that you should be or look like a model...that means nothing. You can say a wall is blue...it's not blue unless it's painted. Meaning work has to go in to make a statement true. Talk is nothing but that...talk. Be a step above...educate yourself first before you go around saying you're a model. Know what it is and what it isn't and what it takes to get ahead legitimately. It takes more than "tna" and "dna" to get to the top...it's take thinking and a plan. Hustlers with no game burn out quickly.
Questions to ask yourself: 3 P Approach (Product, Plan, Preparation)
1. Am I ready as a product? Skin, physique, teeth, hands, feet, etc.
2. Where do I fit in? What are my sizes compared to what agencies sign? Action: Check agency submission, open call req on agency websites
3. What photos do I need as new model? Action: same as #2
4. How do I submit? Action: same as #2
New Models Real Talk- Q. Why am I writing this? To help future models learn from mistakes made by young men and women models I've known over the years. It's free. All info comes from researching the internet and/ or prior model experiences and feedback to me. It's free. Remember, information is out there...don't settle, find it. If you see something I've written somewhere else, you know my style of writing...I can be copied but not duplicated..lol. If something helps you here, pass it on to someone else who may need it. It's about helping each other, not standing in the way and you missing your blessing as well. The biggest compliment you can give yourself is by...READING IT. That means you're serious. OK...Here we go...Can a baller shoot hoops or run the skin if they don't know the game or have the physical training and attributes to get the job done...hell nawh so how do you expect to be successful in modeling without putting in work getting background, fine tuning the product(you)? You can't be truly. This very long paragraph is for all the new models who have asked me questions about modeling, networking. My first questions are always: 1. Why do you want to model? 2. What level of modeling do you want to do? 3. Have you done an assessment of yourself? The product- Skin, body, feet, hands, etc.? 4. Do you have a plan? 5. What do you know about modeling from a business standpoint? What research have you done agency wise? If you can't answer those questions, then you're not ready to be a serious model. I don't know and I'm new to me is bs cop out victim mentality waiting to happen. Point- You're intelligent, act like it. Just because you have no experience in modeling does not mean you should believe every damn thing somebody says. You're in college, educated, street educated or a combo and hold down a job. That says intelligence. Check facts or statements out period. Don't end up being anybody's booboo the fool or compromising photos or videos appearing on youtube, etc. The lure of money, bling, etc. have ended alot of models' careers before they even got off the ground. Your body is not a bargaining chip for the highest bidder to get ahead at any costs and looks only last so long. Do it the right way...you'll have more longevity. Bodies are a dime a dozen...it's what you working with mentally that makes the difference. If you don't respect yourself, nobody else will. Don't sell yourself short. Too many already do!!! Example of a scam: Dateline (msnbc) just had a story on a bogus Texas based reality show that lured approx 12 or so young men and women aspiring models promising them that the winner would win 50K and huge modeling contract. These contestants competed in a reality show that they thought was legit; however, the head guy was busy off camera trying to have sex with both the women and men or place them in compromising positions like having body waxes with the camera rolling on both sexes...if it doesn't feel right, then it normally isn't. Now back to the business advice...
First, Don't jump up saying you only do paid shoots and the photos in your port are subpar, inadequate shots. Nobody is going to want to pay you for anything if your shots don't sell you. Bad shots = no investment in yourself and nobody and I mean nobody is going to be interested in shooting you for anything let alone paying you. If you want to get paid and don't have professional shot from jump, then do a couple of tfcds, get your feet wet and some good shots, then change your option back to paid. Simple as that plus you gain credibility in the process. To that end, don't put up a bio plagued with spelling errors, etc. and expect people to see you or take you as being professional with professional aspirations. If you can't spell, hell use spell check or have somebody else write it. This is not a hip hop joint or game show "guess the damn word". If I read a bio that's not good, I then question how can the model think someone is going to take him/ her seriously. Keeping it real. As well, some people will link your intellect with the bad/ grammar and spelling and think you may be an easy mark for being taking advantage of with a scam, compromising shots, etc. All kinds of people search through mm for new, eager victims for fraud so don't put your personal contact (email, phone #) in your bio. Have people contact you via mm or myspace. At least have a buffer between. If somebody/ company is requiring some huge fee upfront, then odds are they aren't legit or can't deliver. Information is free on the net. Agency sites tell you all you need to know to apply, submit, or open calls. Research them. Study model poses...where? Any magazine, billboard, or commercial to give you a flavor of what real model poses look like. Use a mirror so you see how you look doing the same pose or facial expression, body pose, tone, etc. Practice your craft. Some people posing comes natural, others it takes work. If you're trying to become a serious professional model (notice I qualify), then before you jump out there doing shoots with other people in the photo (couples, artistic, etc.), then make sure you've covered your base shots you're going to need for your book and open calls at agencies (headshots, body shot, fashion, fitness, etc.). Also, take some shots in your true sizes(ie. suit needs to fit, not be oversized) men, not all hip-hop sizes otherwise you've put yourself in only the urban category. If you're trying to get signed and have never been signed, then you want to submit shots of just yourself because the agency is interested in you and whether you're good fit (look, body, etc.), not the other people in the shot and you don't want to be upstaged. Having someone else in the shot doesn't make you any more marketable. First shoot- be clear on the objectives of the shoot period (theme, time length, mua, type (tfcd, paid, etc). Based on the themes and types of shots, you'll know what if anything you need to modify in your look. (ie. if you're shooting underwear or swimwear, you need to shave down your inner thighs, etc.) No matter the shoot, always get some headshots over and above what the theme may be. Don't keep the same look in every shot with every photographer...diversify relative to hair style, facial hair-no facial hair, chest hair, shaved down chest, etc, always shave down your underarms and use a clear deodorant, no powder. What is your competitive edge? Face, eyes, body, dreads...? You need to know what it is and capitalize on it because the world of wannabee models is crowded and growing more crowded everyday. Getting buttass naked doesn't make you unique unless you have the sex appeal, body, and charisma to go with it. Otherwise, you just end up being another naked model in the vortex of millions. Just because you got naked doesn't mean it's getting you ahead of anything. It may end up getting you things you don't want. So, be a businessman or businesswoman about your thinking please. You know what your weaknesses are before someone points them out. Work on the them whether it's skin, body, feet, teeth, etc. otherwise you're setting yourself up for a critique you don't want to hear. Tattoos- people have varying opinions...this is mine especially for models of color. The more you have the harder it is to break into some mainstream markets as some agencies and designers look at tats as being more urban hence you default to becoming an urban only model. That's not to say you can't be successful but my advice is if you don't have any...don't run out and get any. If you have some, then don't get anymore. Tats are an individual expression so don't be offended if an agency decides against using you. Photoshop and airbrushing are not always things businesses want to do. As well, how many fitness mags do you see with models of color all tatted up on the cover or in the mag? The few you do see are well known athletes, entertainers, or actors with selling power. You may have the best body in the world but if it's all covered in tats how can someone really see your true definition and marketability. If you're serious about modeling, think twice before running out to get tatted up especially huge ones. Next point, people download and steal pics from mm and use them God knows where from escort sites, to myspace to ads for nightclubs to events. By the time you find out, your face could have been out there advertising anything. So, I don't recommend posting all your best shots if they don't already have a watermark. You want to get shots from the photog you use with a watermark (company name) which makes it harder for anyone to use if you're going to post them on mm or modelcoast or any other site where the shot can be downloaded. The photog may also agree to providing you some without a company watermark for your professional agency portfolio outside of MM. If you post one w/o a watermark, don't post a large one but reduce the size which would also make it more difficult for somebody to take and use. MM has 3 types of people. Professionals, Semi-Professionals and Un-professionals. If you are a goodlooking woman or man, you're going to get indecent proposals (sex, porn, escort, etc.) from both sexes, encounter tfcds w/strings attached as well as people holding information and opps hostage to get you to compromise your values. Beautiful or handsome equates to desirable period. It's life. It happens especially if you shoot nude shots or have nudity in your portfolio. Be professional... check the person but don't burn the bridge. The odds are you will have to check someone at some point and remind them to keep it professional both from a model and photographer perspective. If you're a woman, it's not out of the question to ask to take a friend, etc. to a shoot; however, don't take someone who will interfere with a professional shoot or legit vision of the photog. Don't allow someone's bad intention, indecent proposal, or inappropriate behavior deter you or throw you off course from your plan or objective. Professional shoots are not overly touchy, feelly (applies to both male and female models). Know that. Great photogs give direction not massages or inappropriate touching, etc. Just as in life, everyone will not have your best interests. Never completely turn over your life or career to someone else...that's a no no. You need to be involved and understand about about the money and opps. You need to understand your damn self, not keep yourself in the dark. People are human and some make mistakes when money is or a goodlooking woman or man involved. If you are a man or woman and have a shot(s) in underwear, bikini, artistic or nude, king mag type (ladies), you're bound to get erotic comments from both sexes. Remember, you can always delete a pic comment. Btw- Jealous boyfriends and girlfriends, husbands and wives are not good escorts to bring to a shoot as their insecurities normally hamper creativity and have caused shoots to be canceled. Don't allow someone's jealousy to derail your career. New Model- If you think you need nudity, check the agency websites you're interested in. You will find they don't want nude shots submitted if they are mainstream fashion, etc. Nudity is an individual choice no matter what point you're at in your career but don't be misguided to think mainstream agencies require it. To model, you have to be comfortable in your own skin. As long as it's a harmless compliment, take it and move on. It's more important that you keep your focus on your modeling career than get mixed up in some drama. On the other hand, MM has some great people who will also help you without any strings attached or ulterior motives. Every type person you find in life...you find on MM. Model Mayhem is NOT supposed to be a hookup joint, myspace or facebook but people use it as such. The fact that a model states they are here for business only or his love for women only or she states her love for men only will not...I repeat WILL NOT keep both sexes from propositioning you. Remember, it's not the proposition but how you handle and react to situation that defines your experience. The real purpose is for serious models to network and gain shoots for the purposes of building or updating a portfolio. Please respect that. School's out. lol Just REAL TALK...REAL LIFE.
NOTE: IF YOU CHECK A LINK AND IT NO LONGER WORKS, PLEASE SHOOT ME A TAG OR MESSAGE...THAT HELPS KEEP IT FRESH...THANKS CAV

Point: If you are applying to a casting call on mm or any other networking site, please make sure you read the entire casting prior to your sending the photographer a message indicating your interest. That's part of being business savvy. Don't insult yourself and the photographer by not reading, asking questions that are covered in the casting and acting like some hollow head mannequin. Think please. Don't just arbitrarily show up with your fan base in tow. Shoots end up cancelled that way and is a waste of everybody's time.
Whether photographer or model, a plan is crucial. Very few ventures in life are successful without one.
Modeling and photography are each a job period requiring preparation and skill. We each have a responsibility to respect each other and aspire to want the best for each other. Photoshoots are collaborations of talent and skill on both sides. Attitudes, lack of professionalism, communication breakdowns, unclear objectives, lateness all can kill and destroy creativity, successful shoots, network and business relationships. Unless you're ready to invest the time it takes, then a person is not ready to be either one.
Success and happiness in life are not about "LUCK"... there is no such thing as "LUCK" in my book. What you focus on is what materializes. Everything in life is about "preparation and plan". Either you're ready for your blessing or you're not and someone else always is plain and simple.
Much success in life... our purpose in life is: LTL
To Learn
To Teach
To Love

Hold Ya Head Up by Cavenaugh 8/09
Don't give up when it seems everything is going wrong.
It's the very time the best is right around the corner stay strong.
When your friends prove who they really are.
Don't be consumed by failure, fear.
When the one who you thought loved you kicked you to the curb.
Remember, you made it through other crisis...
it's alright...you'll go far.
You go from 6 figures to down to zero
It's not over...just remember.
Failure happens to the best people.
You work hard so it won't often be repeated.
It's not a measure of who you are nor who you will become.
The lessons in life are meant to teach us that there is only one.
One source, one love, one life.
We're all connected but all wonder why.
The love of self comes from within.
The winds teach us that over and over again.
Continually loosing yourself, and finding yourself and reinventing.
It all goes back to the very beginning.
You become new...in mindset,
goals and relationships.
Yet somehow, the old won't completely go away...
waiting just to trip.
Material things are only byproducts of the efforts you put in.
Never get lost in the shallow...because if you do in the end...
you will never win.
So, hold ya head up no matter the season.
You , your life, your spirit, the reason.

To Learn
To Teach
To Love

Poetry sample excerpted from my self published poetry book series "Hold Ya Head Up" (New posting)
